Our VITA tax season for Wheaton Library VITA ended on April 18 this year ( I actually prepared a couple of returns on April 19) with over 450 people helped at our Taxwise sites, and 214 military active duty helped at our USO-Bethesda ( Walter Reed) site. Our Taxwise sites included the Long Branch library in Silver Spring, and the Rockville Housing Enterprises facility located off Gude Drive. In addition, I prepared returns for a couple of WWII Navy vets at the Old Soldiers Home/ Lincoln Cottage in D.C.
Our numbers were over 40 percent smaller than last years due to the death of one of our prolific Hispanic preparers, German Sigurany, the moving of our library location from Wheaton Library to Long Branch ( Wheaton Library is being renovated), and the loss of a half dozen veteran preparers. Three new preparers did join or ranks, and they are very quick learners and have a extensive tax background. But it takes a while to get use to the software ( Taxwise)….. and we are told that next year the IRS is switching to Tax Slayer for its tax prep software. But despite these obstacles, our group did a fine job! And we even got a certificate from the Comptroller. (see a previous post)
On a sad note…Barbara’s mother died on April 7 in Baltimore at the age of 89..one month before her 90th birthday. The funeral was held at the Sol Levinson Funeral Home in Baltimore with the burial at the B’nai Israel Cemetery. She was laid to rest next to her husband Morris, who died in 2008.
