VITA numbers down as is IRS Customer Service

This tax season has presented many challenges for our VITA site including the temporary moving of our location to the Long Branch Library and the death of one of our Hispanic Tax preparers. German Sigurany, an IRS Revenue Officer from Puerto Rico, died January 4 from a heart attack. We have a couple of new volunteer tax preparers, but even though they are very dedicated and tax smart, there is a learning curve.
In addition, we have had some terrible cold weather and snow to deal with and problems with TAS and IRS call in assistance.
Our numbers are down 40 percent from last year at this time and we are struggling to get Spanish language translators. But our volunteers are in good spirits and we hope to continually get better.
