In early March, 2016, I called the Maryland Comptroller’s Office and made some comments about his newsletter, the Revenews. I wanted to let the office know that our VITA Volunteers and AARP-TCE volunteers who prepare Maryland tax returns do not need to pay fees. His office called me back and asked to meet me and some of my VITA volunteers at the USO-Metro Bethesda Walter Reed Hospital location. IRS retirees Dave Heiser and me help the military with their tax returns at the USO on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am-1pm. Dave Heiser is the creator of the free program which was started in 2015. The Comptroller wanted to see us on a Monday, so the USO, which makes the appointments, created a special tax help day on March 21 in which his office could take photos and talk to participants of the tax help sessions. Dave also had some special military members there with MD tax issues. Franchot promised that his office could solve those problems. The USO was also given an appreciation certificate at the session.
