Nearly 40 years ago, I joined the Air National Guard…..

Nearly 40 years ago I was taking my basic training at Lackland AFB for six weeks in January-February of 1977. At that time I was working as an Editorial Assistant for Washington Gas Light, and was 27 years old. Since I had joined the West Virginia Air National Guard, and had passed a by-pass test for public affairs, I did not have to go to tech school after basic; but instead went directly to my ANG base in Martinsburg to fill out my three- month military obligation. In addition, my Washington Gas boss wanted me to do a story and take some photos when I returned from my training back to my Gas company job. My chartered bus passed through the gates of Lackland AFB near San Antonio, Texas on January 4, 1977. It was here at "Happy Valley," as it was ironically called that I would spend the next six weeks of my life in a most...

Barbara and Steve attend Marauder 2015 reunion in Tucson Arizona

Barbara and I attended the October 1-3 B-26 Marauder reunion held this year in Tucson, Arizona. About 90 MHS (Marauder Historical Society) members attended the three day event which included about a dozen WWII Marauder veterans and their families. During the second day of the reunion, participants were driven on a bus to the Pima Air and Space Museum and nearby AMARG boneyard of retired aircraft. We stayed in the luxurious Loews Ventana Canyon Resort ( a four star hotel) and ended the reunion with speaker former Texas Lt Governor David Dewhurst who is instrumental in the expansion of the Utah B-26 Museum with his Marauder father as a main feature. .....[caption id="attachment_1287" align="alignnone" width="300"]Martinsburg and Memphis C-5s retired at the Arizona boneyard Martinsburg and Memphis C-5s retired at the Arizona boneyard[/caption] [caption id="attachment_1288" align="alignnone" width="300"]WWII B-26 veteran Stan Welsh stands by his B-26 photo he took in WWII at...

Villages Honor Flight

[caption id="attachment_1129" align="alignnone" width="300"]Bud and Barney at the Korean War Memorial Bud and Barney at the Korean War Memorial[/caption] Barbara and I went to the World War II Memorial on March 25, 2015 to greet my WV Air National Guard fellow retired Air Guardsman William "Barney" Barnhart who was there with his WWII Vet as part of the Villages Bob Kitt Honor Flight. Barnhart was Bud's guardian through the entire honor flight. The flight had left Orlando Airport at 6:30am and arrived at BWI airport in Maryland three hours later. The Florida Honor Flight then boarded their two buses and visited the Arlington National Cemetery, the Air Force Memorial (had lunch there), Marine Memorial (Iwo Jima) and then traveled the Mall where they saw the WWII, Korean, and Vietnam Memorials and a bit of Mr. Lincoln too. Barbara and I were able to travel with Barney and his Navy WWII vet Bud...
