Wheaton Library VITA passes 240 Mark!

As of today, February 21, with snow falling, we have helped over 240 taxpayers file their federal and state returns. Last week, I had to reach out to the Taxwise support site a half a dozen times to transmit returns that were in a twilight zone status....But TW finally made a fix and I can transmit again. But the ACA Health Care input is still giving us fits, especially with the premium tax credit and exemptions. But we are dealing with this challenge and hope things will move smoother as the tax filing season progresses. I hear even IRS walk-in are actually helping prepare some returns now!...

Wheaton VITA site helps over 200 Taxpayers

On February 14, the Wheaton Library VITA site had helped nearly 200 taxpayers file their federal and state income tax returns or answered their tax questions. The site is open on Thursdays fron 3pm-8pm assisting taxpayers making $53,000 or below in income and having simple returns. This year the site also has to deal with the ACA Health Care tax questions which may include a penalty or shared responsibility payment if no health care has been purchased by the taxpayer (without an exemption.) Despite problems with the software, the site has e-filed most of the returns resulting in refunds being received by taxpayers in 1-2 weeks. ...

VITA tax filing season off with a bang!

The IRS officially kicked off its filing season on January 20, and the Wheaton Library VITA was not far behind. Our first library session is not until Thursday, February 5, but we have already successfully transmitted nearly 40 federal ( and 39 state) returns. Some of them have the ACA penalties or as the IRS calls them shared responsibility payments. It looks like to be a very challenging filing season!...
